Feel Good Beer thanks to Earth Beer Company

Earth Brewery

There are many secret gems tucked away in the Tweed hinterland, and Earth Beer Company is a real standout. Overlooking Mount Wollumbin, this brewery has all the charm and character of a simple farm shed and is a groovy spot for a brew or two (or three!). This brewery is new to the block, only opening in early 2020. With three signature brews that are very popular with the locals, a trip up to the brewery to knock back a few is highly recommended. Make sure you’ve got a designated driver or transport to get to and from your accommodation.

Where is all started

Earth Beer Company’s story started as an avocado farm that overlooked Mt Wollumbin. Combined that with an old tin shed, a vision to connect community and a passion for quality beer, and you have Earth Beer Co. This craft beer company believes in making time for the good things that life has to offer; is there anything better than a cool, crisp beer after a day at the beach?

Community is at the heart of it all

What’s more, Earth Beer Co keeps community at the heart of everything they do, making this brand extra special. They work with local suppliers, use local produce and employ the local community. Earth Beer Co believes in low impact brewing and packages all their beers as minimally as possible. They only distribute locally, which is why this brewery is a well-kept local’s secret.

Our Top Tip – The Avocado Kolsch

Set up on an avocado farm, of course Earth Beer Co has a beer made from avos – it would be rude not to. The Avocado Kolsch has a soft and wheat-y body, creamy avocado feel and hint of refreshing lime. It pairs perfectly with a few tacos on the side.

The Home of Ink Gin: Husk Distillers

Sugarcane crop & worker

Have you ever tried Ink Gin? A gin that reacts to different mixers, resulting in a colour change. It’s theatrical, absolutely delicious and has quickly become one of Australia’s most favourite gin, especially with the Millennials. The home of this special gin is Husk Distillers, nestled away in the Northern NSW Hinterland and only a 20-minute drive from most accommodation in Kingscliff.

This family run distillery has grown from a small shed on a cane farm to a beautiful oasis, complete with a cellar door and café. Husk Distillers, set up by Paul Messenger, his wife and three daughters was first established in 2012. The distillery was founded on their cane farm with the vision to create a premium farm-to-bottle, Agricole rum with a refreshing Australian twist.

Sustainability at the core

Husk Distillers’ core product is rum – starting and finishing in the paddock. The cane grown on the farm is harvested, manufactured, fermented, distilled and matured on-site. Sustainability is a big focus for the business; almost all the waste produced making the gin is put back into the 150 acre property; 50 very fat and very spoilt cattle, to be more specific. They eat the distillery waste product – stillage, spent botanicals, cane tops and the high protein yeast – left behind after distilling rum. On the property is 12 hectares of a remnant Gondwana rainforest. Some bi-product created is also used as mulch for regeneration rainforest plantings, or as a compost base.

Make the trip

It’s well worth the trip out to Tumbulgum to visit Husk Distillers and explore the family-run farm. You can simply rock up at the distillery, but it’s recommended you make a booking.

At the cellar door, you can learn new ways to use the famous Ink Gin and discover the new taste of Aussie rum. The distillery welcomes you to stay of lunch, cocktails and a stroll around the grounds. Highly recommended, are the Husk Distillers tours. You’ll learn about the production of Husk rum, the botanicals in Ink Gin and gain a greater understanding of the production process on-site.

Our top tip

The Ink G&T Experience is our favourite tour. Sip on a refreshing Ink G&T as you learn about botanicals, and how to best use tonics and garnishes to make delicious cocktails at home. Learn about the distillery process and then enjoy a cocktail-making class at the end of the tour.

The Husk Distillers range is large and diversified. Known best for their Ink Gin, the distillery also produces various rums, Sloe gin and limited-edition spirits. Everything can be bought at the cellar door or online.
